Using the Delorme Handheld GPS Device for Pipeline Data Collection

At GITA 2010 GIS for Oil & Gas Conference, Christopher Moravec talked briefly about GIS-enabled Field Data Collection. Field operators can now use inexpensive hand held devices to easily collect field data and have that data go round trip from the field, to the backoffice system and back to the field with all necessary approvals. This not only saves time and money by streamlining the process, it also gets the data back to the people who need it in the field.

What are the accuracy and precision of Delorme GPS devices?
Posted @ Tuesday, November 23, 2010 6:42 AM by Mario Haderspock
Mario,

The Delorme PN-60 series handheld has an accuracy of <15 meters for 95% of location aquisitions depending on the number of satellites you are connected with. In many cases we have experience as low as 2-3 meters, this is displayed on the Map screen associated with the PN 40/60 series. Please feel free to contact us if you would like to discuss this further.

Mario,
Terry is correct, a PN series device is not a survey grade GPS unit, but it is not ment to be. If you already have survey grade GPS data for your data points, then a lower accuracy device can be used to assit with user location. The GPS data can be recorded but not used to improve location information.
